Planning guide

What do junk removal companies take?

Most companies take almost any household item a crew can lift: furniture, appliances, boxes, electronics and debris. Each company sets its own list of items it won't take, so ask about anything unusual before your pickup.

Usually accepted

  • Furniture and mattresses
  • Appliances
  • Boxes, clothing and household items
  • Electronics
  • Yard waste and light construction debris
  • Hot tubs, sheds and play sets (with disassembly)

Ask first

Many companies won't take, or charge extra for, items like paints, chemicals, fuel tanks, tires, batteries and anything that may be hazardous. Rules for these items vary and change, so ask the company, and check with your municipality for drop-off options for items a hauler can't take.

Questions to ask the company

  1. Will you take every item on my list?
  2. Are there extra fees for any items?
  3. Do you donate or recycle usable items?
  4. Is the price all-inclusive?

Questions

Will you take paint?

It depends on the company and the type of paint. Ask them directly.

What if a company won't take an item?

Ask them where it can go. Your municipality can also point you to drop-off options.

Ready to clear it out?

Send the details once and hear back from local haulers.
